Raising A Natural Baby
When our grandparents had babies there was no choice but raising them in a natural way. Most women breast fed rather than using bottles and premade formula wasn’t even available. There was also no commercially made baby food.
Babies ate what everyone else did, just pureed. Mothers relied on Castile soap to bathe babies and a variety of home remedies for diaper rash. There were no disposable diapers. Cloth diapers were washed and dried in the sun on a clothesline and most baby clothes were lovingly handmade by mothers and grandmothers. Nowadays we are finding out that modern conveniences are not necessarily better and many young mothers are returning to the ways of their ancestors in raising a natural baby.
We are all finding out that many things that are added in order to preserve products and foods are not healthy for us. It is a normal instinct to want to product our babies from harm in any way we can. Many mothers are using only natural or organic products for their babies. There is a return to cloth diapers, not only for the health of the child, but to keep the mountain of disposable diapers out of our landfills. Organic baby food and formulas are widely available today and some mothers choose to make their own baby food. We are reading labels on clothing and toys to ensure that we are not exposing our children to harmful chemicals. Sometimes the very chemicals that make fabrics fire retardant are harmful in the long term. We are constantly hearing about toy recalls due to lead content.
The manufacturers are responding to consumers as well. Many small companies are making and selling all natural baby products from soaps to sunscreens and even the large manufacturers are getting on the bandwagon. We all grew up with Johnson&Johnson baby products and this industry giant has a new line of products called Best for Baby Naturals. Each product is dermatologist tested and fragrances are ALLERFREE. All ingredients are 98% naturally derived, dye free, and paraben free.
Cloth diapers are enjoying a resurgence in popularity and they are available in 100% organic cotton, bleached and unbleached. I actually read an article about people who are teaching babies at an early age to urinate and defecate into a potty or other vessel and using diapers only when going out. It sounds like a great idea to me. I spent a lot of my teenage years changing diapers for my baby brother and cousins when I was babysitting. I always thought that when I had a baby, potty training would be high priority. From what I have read it is not hard to teach them early and it surely must be much more comfortable for the baby not to be wearing wet diapers. It may not be practical for working parents but think if I were a stay at home parent; I would definitely give this a try.
Everyone wants the best possible life for their children. It may a take a little more effort to raise a natural baby, but you’ll be doing your child a favor and helping to save the planet too.
